- Feeling better
- Improve your life
- Give Benefits to your relationship (family/friends)
- Provide better care to your patients
- Be a Golden example for your family and friends, your patients and their family: a model for your community
To be able to adopt good and healthy habits and be able to incorporate them in our own lifestyle, it is important that we recognize and understand the value of each of them and adopt one or two at a time.
There are a lot of recommendations that help us to stay focus on our Health, there are habits that we should adopt to live our life for the better, but this doesn’t mean that we have to start them all together, also because if we do that, we will not able to continue e pursue for our health goals and we will give up soon all together, even sooner than actually adopt them properly, just because we will become too overwhelmed by them.
The studies demonstrate that a habit can become a milestone of own life-style after 28 days that this has been adopted regularly and constantly
It is important to understand that as many habits we are able to incorporate in our lifestyle as more and more will become healthy and fit.
The metamorphosis in nature doesn’t happen in one night, it takes time and as a caterpillar becomes a butterfly you will be able to become Healthy and Fit!
The trick is to introduce one good and healthy habit a time or 2 but no more, be constant and focus, avoiding distractions!
If we explain to our family and friends the important changes that we are doing in our life, politely declining bad habits, explaining why we are doing it, they will understand our intention and, if they love us, they will become our cheerleaders, helping us and encouraging us to go better and better.
Also, as well, we can encourage them to embrace a right lifestyle too, becoming a real model for them to follow.
Moving abroad as a nurse is a hard thing to do and it requires being focused and strategic. If we don’t embrace a healthy lifestyle our mind won’t be clear and sharp enough to overcome difficult situations and decide for the better when it comes for a new job opportunity or a new improvement of your life.
During my work in the covid ICU in my Trust I had to take care of different people with different background, one day I had to take care of a lady who was an expat… an emigrant like me… she was just a couple of years older than me, she had 4 kids and she was sedated, intubated since long time and she didn’t get better.
Her husband the same
The social service was involved to take care of the kids because there they had not any member of their family who could help, they were migrants like me, alone in a different Country, miles and miles away from their origin Country.
This story made me think a lot. I had to be healthy not just for me, not just for my kids because if I die I leave them without mum, but because if I die I leave them without mum in a Country where they have nobody that can take care of them, where repatriation may can be difficult and they could be separated each other and assigned to stranger, even for a little while, because of covid, for example.
This is a trauma on top of one other trauma!
I lost my mother 12 days before my 18th birthday, my sister was 12, it was not easy at all, but my grandmother came to live with us and she took care of us…. for sure it was less painful comparing with if I and my sister had been separated and assigned to some strangers
By the way I don’t want to make it too sad but I want us to reflect on our Health and take it seriously! We are Nurses but sometimes we forget prevention, which is actually the best remedy for any illness, and embrace a good lifestyle is nothing but a good prevention for illness.
As expat nurses we start a new life abroad…. So why don’t we start that in a right and healthy way that can help us to stay focused and achieve our goals? Moving abroad is a life transformation because it will change you in a good way or in a bad way …it depends on us!
So here some wellness tips, HABITS TO EMBRACE AND PRACTICE EVERYWHERE
- MEDITATE. “Meditate is that who we are, the awake the self” (Nancy Colier). We use meditation to understand ourselves better, to find our strengths, to find our purpose. We use meditation to find habits that we don’t like or recognize that are dangerous for us and change them if we need. We use Meditation to be aware of who we are and who potentially we are able to become. Meditation helps us to be aware of our path and our evolution. These are some of the reasons why Meditation helps us to be focussed on what we do.
- SMILE ALWAYS AND BE KIND. We are a nurses and we know that the patients need our smile to feel protected and in friendly hand but we don’t know that smiling is not good just for our patient because it is good and helpful for us as well: every time we smile to someone he/she smiles back to us and as much smiles we received back as more our mood is cheered up and we are capable to do everything! We MUST understand that smiling and being kind with our colleagues help us to get through the shift easily and happily and make us capable to support even the most difficult shift.
- TRY ALWAYS SOMETHING NEW. Putting yourself to the test increases your courage and gives you the opportunity to increase your skills, this means that it makes you increase your self-esteem, your confidence and your happiness.DO PERSONAL HYGIENE. This may seem undisputed and obvious but in reality, it is not! We wash so much our hands at work that, when we are at home or outside, we would like just a break and we become lazy; we always continue to wash our hands but we do it more quickly. Sometimes we are so tired that when we came back home we going in bed without making a shower. We must continue to practice hygiene and personal hygiene to protect ourselves and others.
- TAKE CARE OF THE ENVIRONMENT. Taking care of the environment is important for millions of reasons but essentially it is important because if we live in a clean and healthy environment it is easy to understand that we have a healthy life. The environmental theory of Florence Nightingale is still actual even after 200 years: if we take care of the environment and of the planet all ecosystems would be preserved, the flora and fauna would remain intact and many diseases related to pollution would decrease until they disappear and we will not run the risk of new infectious diseases ( but we gonna talk about it in one other page).
- USE ESSENTIAL INTEGRATION ESPECIALLY VITAMINS AND MINERALS
